The Cornish Food Box Company – A Transform Journey
2nd November, 2017
Being namechecked in The Observer Food Monthly’s ‘Best Independent Retailers 2017’ round-up was just the latest highlight in the rise of The Cornish Food Box Company, which delivers fresh Cornish produce to delighted customers across Cornwall and the rest of the UK.
Established in 2010 by sisters Tor Amran and Lucy Jones, the company has also recently expanded and taken on a second location in Cornwall.
In 2013, they opened their Truro shop in the ‘The Stores’, a building with deep cellars, brick walls and wonky floors, steeped in history since being built in the 1800s in the quaint street, Walsingham Place, just out of the city madness. Here you can buy a diverse range of Cornish produce including fresh fruit and vegetables; free range meat, poultry and deli items including a Cornish cheese counter, fresh fish, eggs and dairy products; breakfast cereals; alcohol and soft drinks; tea bags and coffee beans; freshly baked bread and delicious spreads; seaweed snacks and sea salts. You can also enjoy the in-store café, where you can choose from some home-baked goods and artisan coffees made with the produce they sell.
Tor and Lucy set up with one mission in mind: provide a place for people to source the best produce that Cornwall can offer, all in one place as part of their weekly food shop. They have many loyal local and national customers who order fresh food to be delivered regularly, but also those who enjoy the experience of their quirky shop and café. They capture the attention of tourists who want to get a flavour of Cornwall and immerse themselves in Cornish culture. They also provide a corporate and retail service building hampers to be delivered nationwide, for those ‘up-country’, to get a taste of Cornwall.
Over the last few months, Tor and Lucy engaged with Transfrom and got some one-to-one coaching with retail expert and business coach Luis Gordon, who helped them build their confidence in the business and sparked that motivation to take the company to a new level.
The new premises at Cardrew Industrial Estate in Redruth will allow the business to keep up with the rapid growth the company is currently experiencing both in traditional food box deliveries and supplying holiday cottages – as well as the popular gift hamper service. The attached shopfront also allows them to display their unique offerings to a wider audience than ever before.
“Oxford Innovation has really helped us through a difficult stage of our growth and I feel like we’re in a much stronger position now. Luis gave us the faith and confidence that we could do it, allowing us to understand and appreciate that we were doing a good job and we had a fantastic business. He enabled us to look at our business from a different angle, to start working on it, not just in it. I can’t stress enough how valuable their help has been, they’ve been fantastic.”
– Tor Amran, Cornish Food Box Company
“Lucy and Tor have been great fun to work with, sharing the same strong aim to make their business a success. I gave them guidance but they are the ones who took the tools they were offered and made things happen. If success is 80% attitude and 20% aptitude, they’ve got both in bucket-loads. Their attitude and determination will ensure that the Cornish Food Box Company is a success in the future.”
– Luis Gordon, Oxford Innovation Business Coach
We look forward to working with them further and watching the next exciting steps the business takes.
